CONTEMPLATIVE ITINERARY

Francisco Monterde

A flight of pigeons

flutter their handkerchiefs

as the locomotive departs.

Francisco Monterde’s Contemplative Itinerary makes use of haikus to narrate a journey he took by railway from Mexico City to Veracruz in 1923. As the title suggests, it is by turns observational and reflective in the tradition of Basho’s Narrow Road to the North. (First English translation)
