Chini wrote the first book on haiku in Italy in 190, together with their first Italian translations.
At the same time he also began to compose his own haiku and tanka as a way of bringing new yet traditional poetic forms into contemporary practice. His strictly rhymed tanka were published in the Futurist Poesia, whilst paradoxically his freer haiku were published in the conservative Meridiona di Roma. (first English translation)
