Juan Jose Tablada - A Vase of Flowers
The toad sings a requiem
For the poor stars
Fallen in his puddle.
José Juan Tablada wrote the first book of Spanish-language haikus, the vastly influential artist’s book A Day. He followed it with another artist’s book, A Vase of Flowers, this time calling his haikus “dissociative lyrics”. The book is divided into sections such as The way, Bestiary, Landscapes and Seascapes, each one headed with an indigenist woodcut by Adolfo Best Maugard.
