Paul Couchoud, André Faure and Albert Poncin

In the burning night
We are looking for an inn.
O those nasturtiums!

In 1904, Paul Couchoud met with haijin while studying in Japan. On his return to France the next year, he convinced two artist friends to take a trip with him, southwards on the canals from Paris, writing haiku and sketching, in imitation of Basho’s famous trip north. This is the first English translation of the haiku cycle resulting from that journey, Au fil de l’eau.
