PEPITAS
Manuel Ortiz Guerrero
The peacock opened out his fan,
and in it the light placed
a madrigal.

The Modernist Paraguayan poet Manuel Ortiz Guerrero, at the end of his brief life, turned to the haiku to write his simplest and most direct poetry, in a form he called the pepita (nugget or seed). He released a collection of them as his last book in 1930: concentrated nuggets of elegiac lyrical verse on luck, love, and life; on politics, art, metaphysics, and religion.
